چکیده

[1] Lightning type identification of temporally coincident optical-VHF time series event pairs collected by the Fast On-orbit Recording of Transient Events (FORTE) satellite’s photodiode detector (PDD) and VHF instrument allows for the investigation of optical properties as a function of lightning type. General trends in the peak optical irradiance and characteristic pulse widths of PDD-VHF coincident events are studied as a function of lightning type, using previously established techniques to identify lightning type based on VHF spectogram-power time series. While lightning type cannot be identified from optical data alone, there are several notable features in the optical record. The distribution of observed characteristic widths of PDD events has a cutoff near 200 ms, which represents a lower limit on the combination of intrinsic optical emission time and pulse broadening due to photon scattering in the intervening clouds. Events with the highest peak optical irradiances observed at FORTE are typically positive initial return strokes. Also, the median value of peak optical irradiance for cloud-to-ground lightning events is more than double that for in-cloud lightning.

Global Optical Lightning Flash Rates Determined with the Forte

Using FORTE photodiode detector (PDD) observations of lightning, we have determined the geographic distribution of nighttime flash rate density. We estimate the PDD flash detection efficiency to be 62% for total lightning through comparison to lightning observations by the TRMM satellite’s Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS), using cases in which FORTE and TRMM viewed the same storm. We present here...

Joint radio and optical observations of the most radio-powerful intracloud lightning discharges

The most radio-powerful intracloud lightning emissions are associated with a phenomenon variously called “narrow bipolar events” or “compact intracloud discharges”. This article examines in detail the coincidence and timing relationship between, on the one hand, the most radio-powerful intracloud lightning events and, on the other hand, optical outputs (or lack thereof) of the same discharge pr...

Mesospheric optical signatures of possible lightning on Venus

A self-consistent two-dimensional model is proposed to account for the transient mesospheric nighttime optical emissions associated to possible intracloud (IC) lightning occurring in the Venusian troposphere. The model calculates the mesospheric (between 75 km and 120 km in altitude) quasi-elestrostatic electric field and electron density produced in response to IC lightning activity located be...

Relationship between lightning-storm characteristics, and both power and rate of lightning-discharge RF emissions observed by FORTE

Prior studies have noted a strongly nonlinear enhancement of lightning flash rates with increasing cloud height. Here we report a related observation, of a tendency for increased intracloud (IC)-discharge radioemission power versus increased height of the electrified cloud. We find that there is a strong statistical increase of effective radiated power (ERP, or isotropic peak power radiated fro...

Simultaneous observations of optical lightning and terrestrial gamma ray flash from space

[1] We present the very first simultaneous detection from space of a terrestrial gamma ray flash (TGF) and the optical signal from lightning. By fortuitous coincidence, two independent satellites passed less than 300 km from the thunderstorm system that produced a TGF that lasted 70 s. Together with two independent measurements of radio emissions, we have an unprecedented coverage of the event....
